Syntax and Sentence Structure: A Functional Approach offers a comprehensive examination of sentence structure as a key resource for meaning in authentic communicative contexts. Drawing on functional linguistics, particularly Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the book conceptualizes grammar not as a rigid set of prescriptive rules, but as a dynamic system of choices that language users employ to fulfill specific communicative goals. A central framework of the book is the view that clauses function simultaneously in three interconnected dimensions: as message, organizing information within a text; as exchange, enacting interpersonal relationships between speakers and listeners or writers and readers; and as representation, construing human experience and reality. Building on this perspective, the chapters analyze major syntactic units such as clauses, nominal groups, verbal groups, and prepositional and adverbial groups, demonstrating how they operate within broader discourse structures. The book further explores how syntactic choices vary according to register, genre, and social context. It discusses differences between spoken and written grammar, the contribution of sentence structure to cohesion and coherence, and the role of syntax in expressing identity, stance, and social relations. In addition to theoretical insights, the volume addresses research methods in functional syntax and practical applications in language education, translation, academic writing, professional communication, and emerging fields such as AI and computational linguistics.
