During a real-time argument, assessing spoken English skills is not only difficult but also extremely important because it requires a combination of pronunciation, fluency, correctness, and the ability to communicate effectively. In this book chapter titled “Assessing Spoken English: Techniques and Best Practices,” a framework that is both clear and practical is presented for the purpose of evaluating spoken English in a manner that is equitable, efficient, and methodical in a variety of educational contexts. This chapter addresses fundamental aspects of speech evaluation, including pronunciation, intonation, fluency, correctness, and rubrics for developing outcomes that are accurate and consistent. Oral interviews, peer and self-assessment, and technology-assisted speech exams are all included. Their instructional effectiveness and real-world application are shown. The focus is on common instructor issue and how to create speaking exams for different skill levels.
